Bridging the Digital Divide in Tower Hamlets
Over the last 5-years our repair and reuse model has helped thousands throughout south London. However we have always known that the digital isolation faced by many in our community is felt far beyond Lambeth and Southwark, which is why we are excited to announce the launch of the BRIDGE project in Tower Hamlets!
What is BRIDGE?
The BRIDGE project is a partnership between the East End Community Foundation, Community TechAid, and TTB CircularIT, generously supported by Barings. This initiative is dedicated to alleviating digital poverty for residents in Tower Hamlets.
Through the distribution of refurbished technology, this project will support residents with the tools, skills, and opportunities needed to engage in the digital world. By collaborating with local community organisations, we provide digitally excluded communities with devices, connectivity, and skills training. We know firsthand that digital poverty cuts people off from vital services, leading to poorer financial, social, and health outcomes. From those experiencing homelessness to young care leavers, digital exclusion compounds existing inequalities, making it even harder for people to access the opportunities and support they need.
How BRIDGE works
Much like our work in south London, we will be identify those most need in support through a network of community partners. These charities and community groups work closely with care leavers, those experiencing homelessness and unemployment as well as others who face systemic barriers to support.
Each month we will be supporting residents with:
A device of their own – a refurbished laptop for users to keep
Connectivity – the opportunity to benefit from a years worth of broadband
Skills training – support to build the confidence to use technology day to day
A device on its own isn't enough. By combining the tools, the connection and the skills, BRIDGE helps residents take part in the digital world on their own terms.
Get involved
Digital inclusion isn't a luxury; it's a basic part of taking part in modern life. BRIDGE is one step towards making that a reality for everyone in Tower Hamlets.
If you're a community organisation supporting residents who could benefit, or you have devices to donate, we'd love to hear from you. Get in touch with the Community TechAid team to find out more: partnerships@communitytechaid.org.uk
