Community TechAid will wipe your device of all data as soon as reasonably possible after receipt. If your organisation requires proof of data removal we can use software from Blancco to provide a certified reference number but this solution does incur a cost for us.
If you are a business donating multiple devices please contact us for further information.
All devices will be wiped of all data to a level matching or exceeding the standard defined by the UK National Cyber Security Centre.
Before donating your device, you may wish to make a backup of any important data, as well as performing the wipe yourself for your own peace of mind. The above link provides guidance on how to do this.
For more information about how we remove data from your device, take a look at our FAQs.
GDPR and Data Cleaning Policy Statement
We have a duty to ensure that donated devices are securely wiped so that donors’ personal information is completely removed before allocation to recipient organisations.
For personal data there is a legal requirement under GDPR for LTA as a Data Processor to ensure all personal data has been removed. We also have a duty of care to ensure other data that would fall outside of GDPR has been removed.
If we are unable to wipe your device, (because the disk is non-functional, for example), we will ensure that the device is destroyed in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018 via To Recycle, a recycling organisation registered with the ICO (Information Commissioner's Office). Any erasable functioning media is wiped using a multipass binary overwipe; any non-functioning or non-erasable media is physically destroyed; both methods ensure all data is completely and irretrievably eradicated.
